7-Eleven® launches Women’s Franchise Giveaway Contest

Posted on April 26th, 2018

Several prime locations available for franchise in the Southeast

Charlotte, N.C. – 7-Eleven, Inc., the world’s largest convenience retailer, is seeking applicants for its ‘W.E. Take the Lead’ Women’s Franchise Giveaway Contest. The company, hoping to offer female entrepreneurs a fee-free franchise location, has several franchise opportunities available in the Southeast, with prime locations in Virginia, W. Virginia, and both North and South Carolina.

7-Eleven opened the contest in March, in conjunction with National Women’s Month, to all eligible women interested in becoming an independent business owner with the world’s largest convenience retailer. One deserving woman will be awarded an initial franchise fee-free* 7-Eleven franchise, for an initial franchise fee value of up to $190,000.  This is the second year 7-Eleven has targeted women for the franchise giveaway.  The multiphase contest includes submitting a detailed franchise application, meeting company franchising qualifications, preliminary interviews, a video submission, an in-store hands-on experience, and a final one-on-one interview with 7-Eleven senior leadership for the top finalists, all of which will occur over an eight-month period.

“We had such an incredible response last year that we’re excited to open the contest again to women interested in joining the 7-Eleven team,” said Brian Mulcahy, 7-Eleven franchise sales representative. “7-Eleven is a big supporter of women entrepreneurship, and we want to give women more opportunities to thrive within the communities in which we operate.”

Ramandeep “Remy” Kaur, who has owned and operated a 7-Eleven store in Charlotte, N.C., for the past two years, commented, “I was inspired to pursue ownership after hearing other female franchisees who spoke very highly of the company. I also wanted to move away from the corporate work world, but liked the idea of having the support of a large organization behind me.” A native of Punjab, India, Kaur has lived in the United States for the past 21 years. Notably, she has won eight 7-Eleven Retailer Initiative Awards for Food and Sales Growth in the Market. She further said, “I love the people I work with. They are like family, not workers, and with everyone’s efforts, this has been a financially rewarding experience.”

Lorena Trivino, a native of Cali, Columbia, is another successful 7-Eleven franchisee in Charlotte. She just opened a store this month after having spent 13 years with the company as both an assistant manager and as a manager. She said, “Many of my relatives are business owners, including my father back in Columbia. This is something I always wanted to do, and after seeing others succeed in going from manager to owner, I was convinced that this was the right thing for me.”

Interested women can enter online at Franchise.7-eleven.com/franchise/we-take-the-lead now through 11:59 p.m. CDT on May 7, 2018. The winner will be announced in October 2018. To qualify, an entrant must be age 21 or older, a legal resident of the U.S., have sufficient financial resources, be able to move, at their own expense, to an area with 7-Eleven convenience stores available for franchising, have excellent credit and at least three years of leadership, retail or restaurant experience, and meet 7-Eleven’s new franchisee qualifications. Contestants will go through the same qualification process as all 7-Eleven franchise applicants including, but not limited to, credit evaluation, background check, a leadership test, business plan development, budget and store location preferences. Please refer to the contest’s Official Rules for a full description of all eligibility requirements for entering the contest.

In addition, 7-Eleven will make a donation to the winning woman’s charity of choice that aligns with the 7-Eleven Project A-Game® grant program. Project A-Game funds youth programs focused on education, fitness, safety and hunger relief.

This year marks the 54th year of franchising for the world’s largest convenience store, and today, franchisees operate almost 90 percent of the 7-Eleven stores across the U.S.

The company also offers discounts to veterans interested in business ownership. An interactive map at http://franchise.7-eleven.com/franchise/franchises-for-sale indicates stores available for franchising.

*The maximum value of the initial franchise fee will be up to $190,000.  The winner will be required to pay any portion of the initial franchise fee for a store they select that is more than $190,000.  There are additional fees and expenses that the contest winner will be required to pay as part of franchising a 7-Eleven convenience store in addition to the initial franchise fee.  Please refer to 7-Eleven’s Franchise Disclosure Document for a full description of all fees and costs associated with acquiring a 7-Eleven convenience store franchise.

Channel 2: Call Collett: Spa closes unexpectedly, customer left with gift cards

Posted on April 5th, 2018

By: Rebecca Collett

A Lowcountry woman received a gift card to a local spa for her birthday.  When she called to book her appointment, the business had shut down.  Stuck with the gift, she called Count on 2 investigator Rebecca Collett for help.

“I would go twice a year,” Rebecca Dixon explained to the Count on 2 team.  Gift cards to Sandalwoods Spa in Summerville were her gift of choice from family members for Mothers’ Day and other holidays.

Most recently her father bought one on March fifth for Rebecca’s birthday.  By March 18th a new business was remodeling the old Sandalwoods space.

“I called you because I know you help a lot of people with things that aren’t fair,” she told Rebecca Collett during a sit down interview.

According to business license records, Lorri Campbell owned Sandalwoods.  She now goes by Lorri Hagerman.  Since closing the store, she moved out of state to Wyoming. She has not responded to requests for comment on selling the gift cards so close to shutting down the business.

A new spa has completed renovations and moved into the space. According to Summerville records, the news business license is under the company name of “Tomorrow By Dyana”.  The license was issued on March 8, 2017 but the business owner filed a Notice of Change Form to move the company to the 105 South Cedar address on March 26, 2018 and The Winchester Spa and Salon opened the first week of April.

“It’s in the same spot, and I feel like she should take over the debt,” Rebecca Dixon explained.

News 2 reached out to Dyana Winchester , the owner of The Winchester Spa and Salon about honoring the gift card sold to customers of Sandalwoods.

“We are willing to accept the gift certificates, we just need to break it up a bit,” she explained.

She is offering would-be clients the option to use gift cards half at a time.  If a patron comes in with a $100 gift certificate for a massage, they can use half toward the massage.  The client will have to pay the other half of the cost of that massage.  On the next appointment, the customer can use the balance of their gift card.   Here’s why.  Dyana told News 2 she can’t absorb the cost of free services so soon into opening.

Rebecca Dixon says the situation is simply unfair.

“I should not have to pay out of pocket to use my gift card,” she explained.

With more and more brick and mortar businesses going out of business, consumer experts warn to use gift cards may not be the best gift.  But if you have gift cards, use them quickly.

And if a store closes before you can redeem them, some credit card companies will reimburse you for the lost money.  There is a catch.  You may have a limited time to cash in on a refund.

All is not lost for Rebecca Dixon.  Local spa, Skin Help Studio at Belle Hall,  offered her a  90 minute birthday massage at no cost.

Posted on April 4th, 2018

By Hanna Raskin hraskin@postandcourier.com

Q: Hi, me and two friends will be visiting Charleston for three nights in a few weeks, and we love to eat! We’re looking for a range of dining ideas, to get a taste of S.C. I think we’ve already earmarked one meal for Husk, but looking for some good local suggestions for both upscale and Lowcountry cuisine. Thanks!

By far, the question I’m most frequently asked is “Where should I eat on my Charleston vacation?”
